Is it so wrong to like Rock & Roll music that’s uncouthly gritty and not void of substance? It seems as if there is yellow caution tape surrounding tunes that are a hybrid of southern blues and old fashion rock & roll. However, there is one new band that wasn’t afraid to enter the danger zone, The Black Summer Crush. Their music is instinctive and teeters on the edges psychotropic funk without falling into a one-dimensional pit.
The audacious guitar missions and rhythmic drum backings are the perfect cushion for Flowers’ passionate presence to fall onto. It’s stellar how the entire band can transition from a grimy bit into a moment of humming tranquility. Although their influences are rather easy to spot, The Black Summer Crush was able to put a slightly tumultuous spin on the fundamentals keeping them from becoming a carbon copy. The arrangements and choruses are captivatingly tight yet they sound ultimately impromptu. Stand Out Songs: Memphis Sun, Lucky Girl, Angel
