Remember when New York City was a dangerous place? Back before Giuliani spit shined Gotham’s seamy underbelly and made a big show of “cleaning up” the streets? So do The Volunteers, whose sophomore release Spectrophilia could have soundtracked the finest bar brawls, alley fights, and endless nights in New York history. Aided by Paul Mahajan (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, The National), Stuary Bogie (Antibalas), and Clint Steele (The Swans), The Volunteers latest teems with a vintage charm and enough skuzzball riffs to fill even the grimiest appetite. Elbow greased by producer Dan Goddard, who studied at the altar of Ozzy producer Michael Wagener, the album was brought to life at Monsterland Studio in Brooklyn.
