Passion Pit is an electro-pop quartet, a la The Postal Service, MGMT, out of Cambridge, Mass. After hearing a bit of whirling buzz, I decided to grab their EP, Chunk of Change. On the surface their upbeat, heavily electronic debut EP undoubtedly has a club appeal, but further listening reveals these guys are brimming with a talent beyond that of a simple club buzz hit. Chunk of change was originally recorded as a Valentine’s day gift by, then the only member, creator Michael Angelakos for his girlfriend at Emerson college.  The tracks that stand out for me are “Cuddle Fuddle”, which opens with what feels like an oldschool hip-hop style track, reminiscent of an electronic lovechild of Biz Markie and Vampire Weekend, and “Live to Tell the Tale” which reminds me of The Postal Service. They will be releasing their first full length album in early 2009. Keep an eye out for it, we definitely will be doing the same.
