Exoticism comes naturally to DeVotchKa, the troupe of musical mutts, miracles and miscreants led by Nick Urata and his marvelously milky tenor. Pulling from his mottled pool of influence — Russian Chanson and hushed indie folk here, unhinged gyspy-rock and Mexican mariachi there – Urata and company have carved out their own comfortable niche in the modern music landscape.

After the release of 2004’s How It Ends, a pair of filmmakers caught wind of their music, and asked the band to contribute both old and new material to the soundtrack. Maybe you’ve heard of a little Academy Award winner named Little Miss Sunshine? Yeah, the rest is, as they say, history — the kind of history that includes big budget video games snagging your music for commercials. Indeed, the highly-anticipated Gears of War 2 recently unveiled a trailer and DeVotchKa’s “How It Ends” served as sonic backdrop.
