‘Face Control’ is the second album from Montreal’s Handsome Furs, which is a music outfit comprised of husband and wifey Alexei Perry and Dan Boeckner. The album was recorded and mixed by Arlen Thompson at Mount Zoomer, while Perry and Boeckner penned the tracks together. For those of you thinking the name Dan Boeckner rings a bell, perhaps it’s because he is a busy man in the music world and is also a member of the delightful band, Wolf Parade (he was also a part of the former band, Atlas Strategic).
Handsome Furs‘ latest album ‘Face Control’ has been out for a couple of months now, but I found myself revisiting it this past weekend, taking the time to soak in the album as a whole. I am not very familiar with The Furs‘ 2007 debut album, ‘Plague Park’, so I can’t provide an accurate comparison between it and their latest album, and I cannot point out any big changes or areas of growth. However, I can say that I am rather impressed with ‘Face Control’.
Though ‘Face Control’ is consistent in its synth pop glory, a few tracks in particular make my ears perk up, such as, ‘Legal Tender’, ‘Evangeline’, ‘Talking Hotel Arbat Blues’ and ‘All We Want, Baby, Is Everything’…just to name a few. While I think Handsome Furs are a great duo, and each part is as important as the other, I cannot help but focus on Boeckner’s notable versatility on this album…he is not his Wolf Parade self.
