new-ruinsThe Illinois based band, New Ruins began as a duo in 2004 with Elzie Sexton and Caleb Means. The pair self recorded and released an LP (A Collection) and two EP’s (‘Build A Fort-Set That On Fire’ & ‘Hotter Months’) before they signed to a label and released ‘The Sound They Make’ in 2007. The twosome eventually added a few new members to the band, Roy Ewing on drums, Paul Chastain on bass/keys and fifth member, Andrew Davidson on bass and auxiliary percussion.

New Ruins recently released their third full-length album, ‘We Make Our Own Bad Luck’ on Hidden Agenda Records.

I came across New Ruins’ music a couple of days ago (the tracks, Lake and Symptoms) and I was immediately intrigued with their sound. Their music has a melodic underbelly that buzzes with a lo-fi hum and a folk riddled backbone that bends without breaking. New Ruins murky album ‘We Make Our Own Bad Luck’ makes me depressed and happy at the same time…I kinda like it.

One word- underappreciated. An ever evolving band. These guys would fit well on the Sub Pop roster. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
