I was introduced to the international conglomerate, Vadoinmessico, via their SXSW performance of, “In Spain”, and became immediately smitten. Even in a stripped down, acoustic environment, the five members of Vadoinmessico crafted an infectiously raw rhythm. As far as the band’s sound and diversity goes, Salvador Garza (melodica, glockenspiel) summed it up rather nicely in a Spinner.com interview: “We go for something like Mediterranean alternative folk with a bit of psychedelic rock , it is a mash up of all of our nationalities which ended up in the UK. The singer Giorgio is Italian, he is from Rome, I am from Mexico, Stephan is from Austria and Allesandro is from Italy as well. Our new drummer Harry is English, but we have had other drummers from Venezuela, Canada all over the place.”
I finally had a chance to spend some time with Vadoinmessico’s self-titled seven track EP and I must say, I dig it. The band’s instrumental versatility (mellotron, banjo, ukulele, keys, guitar, drums…) along with Poti’s distinct (and oddly charming) voice makes the strong Latin presence somewhat distorted (in a good way). While a few tracks on the EP tend to beckon for my attention a little more than others, “Cave”, “Teeo”, “In Spain” and “Shining Up The Green”, I have no problem listening to it from start to finish. For me, Vadoinmessico’s music is like a breath of fresh air in a polluted city.
