Broken-BellsI try not to get overly excited about collaborations these days because more often than not, the outcome is a let down, however, it’s been impossible to resist daydreaming about the musical possibilities of Broken Bells (name is not written in stone). Broken Bells is a relatively new collaboration comprised of Shins’ lead singer, James Mercer, and deft producer/member of Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). The duo recently unveiled the first single (“The High Road”) from their forthcoming self-tilted debut, which is due out March 9th via Columbia Records.

As far as the roles go within Broken Bells, Mercer handles the vocal, guitar and bass duties, while Burton governs the organ, drums, piano and synth.

Rolling at least 11 deep, Gnarls Barkley’s band was exceptional. Although it was near impossible to make out Cee-Lo’s lyrics, the music was tight and seriously funky. Gnarls Barkley even travels with its own, albeit unique string quartet of talented youngsters. Their cover of Gone Daddy Gone, was righteous live.

Since their arrival onto the musical scene, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been one of the most consistent bands to date. After seeing them live, it is rather apparent why. Each member of the Chili Peppers is superior in their roll. Until last night I had no idea that John Frusciante ripped that much on the guitar…he was awesome. Anthony Kiedis is the true epitome of a front-man, his emotion and his energy never faded even with his rigorous dancing. With the audience in a choke-hold, the Chili Peppers played a wide variety of their latest and their greatest. Basically, the Red Hot Chili Peppers rock, go see them live.

*Note: The Chili Peppers’s stage set-up is wicked.
