busdriverBusdriver, whose birth name is Regan Farquhar, is an underground MC hailing from Los Angeles. He is known for his rapid-fire, jazzy, free-association style of hip-hop.

Busdriver released his first of many albums, ‘Memoirs of the Elephant Man’, in 2001, followed by ‘This Machine Kills Fashion Tips’ and ‘Temporary Forever’ in 2002. And in 2003 Busdriver collaborated with fellow underground musicians Radioinactive and Daedelus to create the LP, ‘The Weather’.

In 2005, Farquhar also became a “Corn Ganggster”, rapping with Nick Diamonds and J’aime Tambeur…this offshoot project of The Unicorns goes by the moniker, Th’ Corn Gangg.

Busdriver recently released his latest album ‘Jhelli Beam’, via Epitaph Records and had a little help from LA producers like, Elvin “Nobody” Estella, Daedelus, Free the Robots, and Nosaj Thing. I haven’t listen to the album in its entirety, just a few tracks but after doing some blog scavenging it looks as if ‘Jhelli Beam’ has gotten mixed reviews.

del-the-funky-homosapienDel the Funky Homosapien and his crew, the Hieroglyphics came out as a markedly non-gansta response to a growing West Coast scene.

After being called on at the age of 17 by his cousin Ice Cube, Del released two records on Elektra, ‘I Wish My Brother George Was Here’ (1991) and ‘No Need For Alarm’ (1993). Despite recognizable record sales, his third album ‘Future Development’ was never commercially released and Del parted ways with Elektra.

Apart from collaborations with PrincePaul, El-P (Company Flow), and help from a few of his Hiero collaborators (A-plus, Casual, Domino) Del handled the majority of production on his most recent album.

On his latest album, ‘Funk Man (the stimulus package)’, Del poetically covers the state of the economy as well as the state of the music business.

kid-cudiFor the past three years, Cleveland, Ohio native Kid Cudi has been holed up in a Brooklyn studio turning his worldview into a musical signature, mixing clever, melodic flows with indelible hooks that owe as much to alternative rock records as hip-hop classics.

The Fool’s Gold label signed him to their family of rap iconoclasts (including Kid Sister and DJ A-Trak) and included him as a special guest on their sold-out North American tour. Since then, Kid Cudi has rocked crowds at NYC nightclubs like SOBs and Hiro Ballroom.

Kid Cudi’s single “Day ‘N’ Nite” served as his introduction to the masses, and it was a great choice because it showcases his overall style and sound. “If you like my music, it’s not gonna be because of some witty line I said or me being political,” explains Cudi. “It’s gonna be because you connect with me as a person, and you relate to my story, putting yourself in my SB Dunks, you feel me?”

Lately I have been yearning for some hip-hop mixed with a rock-n-roll edge, thankfully The Knux has satisfied my craving.  Rah Almillio and Krispy Kream the sibling duo from N’awlins are an oddity in the hip-hop world, as they play a variety of instruments and seem more like a band than a persona. The Knux have a wide range of musical influences, from Rza to The Dust Brothers…this is certainly evident on their debut album Remind Me In Three Days. By including techno beats and rock roots into a hip-hop soup, The Knux definitely stands out among their peers, however, I find their music more fulfilling in small bites.  When I listened to Remind Me In Three Days in its entirety the music started to sound a little washed out and it lost its potency.  Overall, it’s nice to see some innovation swirling around the hip-hop/rap genre and I offer a golf-clap to The Knux.
