The Illinois based band, New Ruins began as a duo in 2004 with Elzie Sexton and Caleb Means. The pair self recorded and released an LP (A Collection) and two EP’s (‘Build A Fort-Set That On Fire’ & ‘Hotter Months’) before they signed to a label and released ‘The Sound They Make’ in 2007. The twosome eventually added a few new members to the band, Roy Ewing on drums, Paul Chastain on bass/keys and fifth member, Andrew Davidson on bass and auxiliary percussion.
New Ruins recently released their third full-length album, ‘We Make Our Own Bad Luck’ on Hidden Agenda Records.
I came across New Ruins’ music a couple of days ago (the tracks, Lake and Symptoms) and I was immediately intrigued with their sound. Their music has a melodic underbelly that buzzes with a lo-fi hum and a folk riddled backbone that bends without breaking. New Ruins murky album ‘We Make Our Own Bad Luck’ makes me depressed and happy at the same time…I kinda like it.
