youth-groupFor their new record, The Night Is Ours, the Australian band Youth Group decided to forgo the more traditional approach employed for their previous records. Over the period of a couple of months in late 2007, the band holed up in a near-derelict 1920s mess hall on Sydney’s harbor. They decided against traditional studio procedures and turned the vacated building into a studio, bringing in all of their own gear to create an inimitable recording environment which allowed them to work at their own pace.

The album The Night Is Ours will be released April 7th on Ivy League Records.

I first noticed Youth Group when I heard the song, Forever Young because I couldn’t get it out of my head. Thankfully I went out and purchased their sophomore album Skeleton Jar. Although these Aussies have a deceptively cheery sound, if you take a listen to the lyrics you discover a much deeper sorrow filled motive. A mix between indie rock and folk, Youth Group delivers a gentle hint of emotional angst.

The indulging tempo of the song Shadowland is accompanied by vivid words sure to spark an interest. The vocals of Youth Group are crisp and clean, inviting the listener to take part in the conversation. Other stand out tracks on the album are, Piece of Wood, The Frankston Line and Lillian Lies.
